The performance characteristics of color masterbatches are as follows: (1) Lightfastness: Under light exposure, certain pigments become sensitized, leading to fading and embrittlement of colored fibers; the lightfastness of a pigment is fundamentally related to its chemical structure. Therefore, when formulating color masterbatches, due consideration must be given to the choice of pigment.
The performance of the filler masterbatch is as follows:
(1) Lightfastness: Under illumination, certain pigments can become sensitized, leading to fading and embrittlement of colored fibers. The lightfastness of a pigment is primarily determined by its chemical structure. Therefore, when formulating color masterbatches, it is essential to give full consideration to the lightfastness of the pigment, and when using lightfast pigments, UV absorbers should be incorporated as appropriate.
(2) The pigments used in color masterbatches must exhibit excellent stability when applied to colored polyester fibers. In other words, when the colored fiber polymer is exposed for extended periods to heat, light, or high temperatures, the pigments should not react with the fiber to form new chemical groups, thereby compromising the polymer’s performance. Therefore, color masterbatches should, whenever possible, use pure pigments, and the content of salt-free impurities such as iron, copper, and lead should be kept to a minimum to ensure that the colored polypropylene exhibits superior physical properties.
(3) Water-resistant, dry-cleanable, and oil-resistant colored polypropylene products should be washed with water or dry-cleaned with solvents, particularly when in contact with carpets. Therefore, the dyes used must exhibit excellent water resistance, dry-cleaning resistance, and oil resistance.
(4) Heat Resistance: The heat resistance grade of specialty color masterbatches is typically matched to the type of plastic used in the final product, ensuring safe use at ambient temperatures. Discoloration of varying degrees may occur only under the following conditions: first, when the processing temperature exceeds the normal range; second, when the machine is shut down for an extended period.
The advantages of filler masterbatches are as follows:
1. Good dispersibility
In the practical application of masterbatch filling, operators can follow the instructions in the manual to perform appropriate handling procedures and then incorporate the masterbatch into plastic film production through the relevant processing steps. Excellent dispersibility ensures that the finished product looks more natural and exhibits sufficiently stable chemical and physical properties, thereby meeting the producer’s quality objectives.
2. Sufficient machinability
Even the mundane achievements in the processing stage can demonstrate the excellent performance of masterbatch filling, taking into account not only the impact of raw materials on the final product but also the application of manufacturing technologies in masterbatch-filling production.
3. It can enhance the gloss of the product.
Plastic films are widely used in products such as garbage bags and agricultural films. To capture consumers’ attention, manufacturers typically leverage two key factors: color and gloss. Filler masterbatches enhance product gloss and color, thereby increasing the perceived value of plastic bags and similar items; in particular, they improve toughness, which in turn boosts the frequency of product use. With careful selection, the superior performance of filler masterbatches can be optimized to meet product requirements, enhancing their versatility, dispersibility, and processability.
