A White Crystal Sand Manufacturer Discusses Seven Industrial Application Solutions for Heavy Calcium Quality Requirements

According to the white crystalline sand manufacturer, high-quality heavy-grade calcium carbonate is characterized by a high CaCO3 content, minimal levels of impurities such as silicon and iron, and stringent limits on harmful heavy metal elements. Whether it is heavy-grade or light-grade calcium carbonate, its whiteness depends on the quality of the raw material source.

For plastic materials, whiteness does not affect their mechanical or processing performance; however, higher whiteness is generally perceived as preferable, and materials with both superior functionality and high whiteness enjoy a stronger competitive advantage. The lower the oil absorption value, the better: specifically, the amount of dibutyl phthalate (DBP) absorbed by 100 g of powder material is defined as that material’s oil absorption value.

For certain plastic products, such as soft PVC, synthetic leather, and cable compounds, plasticizers are essential. The higher the oil absorption value of heavy calcium carbonate powder, the more plasticizer it can adsorb, thereby reducing the effectiveness of the plasticizer. To achieve a desired level of softness, the amount of plasticizer must be increased, which in turn raises production costs. Surface treatment of the heavy calcium carbonate powder—by coating the particle surfaces—can reduce its oil absorption, thus minimizing plasticizer uptake.

Baijingsha’s manufacturer informs you that calcium is widely used across various industries. In China, the primary consumer markets for heavy calcium carbonate include plastics, rubber, papermaking, paints, inks, adhesives, toothpaste, animal feed, and pharmaceuticals. However, different industries have varying quality requirements; in particular, the following application areas for heavy-grade calcium carbonate are provided for your reference.

  I. Papermaking: At present, China has not yet promulgated a national standard mandating the cessation of the use of heavy calcium carbonate; however, papermaking enterprises have clear technical specifications for its application, which are categorized into filler-grade and coating-grade products.

II. Plastics: The plastics market is a major consumer of heavy calcium carbonate, and its addition serves the following purposes: (1) increasing volume while reducing costs; and (2) enhancing the heat resistance of plastic products.

Heavy calcium carbonate is an important plastic filler, characterized by low cost, high chemical purity, chemical inertness, and excellent thermal stability, and is widely used in PVC, PE, PP, and various unsaturated resins.

III. Functions of Rubber and Heavy Calcium Carbonate in Rubber Products: (1) Bulk filling to reduce costs; (2) Improvement of processing performance, with both reinforcing and anti-reinforcing effects; (3) Enhanced processability, facilitating the incorporation of other additives; (4) Increased tensile strength, wear resistance, and tear strength.

IV. Paints and Coatings: Fillers serve a spatial and partitioning function (acting as a skeletal structure) and can substitute for some of the white pigment in paints.

  V. The quality requirements for adhesives and sealants containing heavy calcium carbonate fillers are higher than those in the rubber and plastics industries; typically, the fineness must exceed 1250 mesh (d97 ≤ 10 μm), and the surface must undergo organic modification.

VI. Food, Pharmaceuticals, and Feed: Calcium carbonate is a feed additive used in medical foods, primarily to supplement calcium in humans and animals.

VII. Toothpaste: Toothpastes formulated with heavy calcium carbonate as a filler modify the rheological properties of the paste and, through the friction of its fine particles, effectively remove surface stains from the teeth.
